The word “fob” is often used for any car key with buttons, but there are important differences between a remote, a transponder key and a keyless-entry fob. Knowing the difference can make it easier to describe the problem and avoid paying for the wrong solution.

Fob Types Comparison: Start With What Your Key Does

A vehicle key normally has two separate jobs. One is physical: turning a lock or operating an emergency key blade. The other is electronic: proving to the vehicle that an authorised key is present. On many vehicles, the buttons that lock and unlock the doors are a third function again.

That is why a key can sometimes start the engine but fail to operate the central locking, or unlock the door manually but not start the vehicle. The symptoms matter. A flat remote battery, damaged buttons, a worn key blade and an immobiliser fault do not call for the same repair.

Basic mechanical keys

Older vehicles may use a plain metal key with no electronics. It operates the door and ignition purely through its cut pattern. These are the most straightforward keys to copy, although the condition of the locks still matters.

They are less common on modern cars and vans because they offer no electronic immobiliser protection. If a vehicle has a plain key, a spare can usually be made quickly from a working original. If all keys are lost, the locksmith may need to decode the lock or work from vehicle information before cutting a replacement.

Transponder keys

A transponder key has a small chip inside its plastic head. When the key is placed in the ignition or brought close to the starting system, the vehicle reads that chip. If its code is accepted, the immobiliser allows the engine to start.

Some transponder keys have no remote buttons at all. Others combine a transponder chip with a remote. This is where confusion often starts: replacing the metal blade alone may open the doors, but it will not start the car unless the new key is also programmed correctly.

Transponder systems are widely used across cars, vans and commercial vehicles. They are reliable, but they are not immune to damage. A key that has been dropped, got wet, split apart or put through a washing machine may lose its chip or develop an intermittent fault. A fully trained automotive locksmith can assess whether the issue is the key, the battery, the remote section or the vehicle’s system before recommending a replacement.

Remote central-locking keys

A remote key has buttons to lock, unlock and sometimes open the boot or tailgate. It may be a separate fob attached to a key, or incorporated into the key itself. The remote sends a radio signal to the vehicle, while a transponder chip, if fitted, handles engine authorisation.

A remote that has stopped working does not automatically need replacing. Start with the simple checks: a weak battery, worn button contacts or a damaged casing can all cause trouble. However, if the remote has been lost or its circuit board is damaged, a replacement needs to be compatible with the vehicle and programmed to communicate with it.

Do not assume a used remote will be suitable because it looks identical. Many fobs are locked to the original vehicle once programmed. Even where reuse is technically possible, condition, correct frequency and chip specification all need checking. The apparent bargain can become wasted time and money.

Flip or folding keys

Flip keys keep the metal blade folded into the remote housing. Pressing a button releases the blade, much like a pocketknife. They are common because they are compact and protect the blade in a pocket or bag.

Their weak point is usually mechanical. The hinge can wear, the release button can break or the blade can become loose. A damaged flip-key shell may be repairable when the electronics still work, but a snapped blade or failed transponder requires a more complete solution. Leaving a loose blade unchecked risks it breaking in the ignition or door lock at the worst possible moment.

Keyless-entry and proximity fobs

Keyless-entry fobs let the driver unlock the vehicle without pressing a button, usually by touching the handle while the fob is nearby. Many also allow push-button start. The car detects the fob at short range and checks its encrypted identification before granting access or allowing the engine to start.

These systems are convenient, but the fob contains more than a simple battery and button board. It is a security device tied closely to the vehicle. The correct fob must be selected and programmed using suitable equipment and procedures.

Most proximity fobs also contain an emergency mechanical key blade. It may slide out or sit behind a small cover. That blade is easy to overlook until the fob battery goes flat. Knowing where it is, and checking that it actually opens the driver’s door, is a sensible precaution. A fob battery warning on the dashboard should be dealt with promptly rather than ignored until the vehicle will not respond.

Smart cards

Some manufacturers use a card-shaped device instead of a conventional key. It may slot into a reader, remain in the cabin for keyless start, or do both depending on the vehicle. Smart cards are slim and convenient, but their shape makes them easier to bend, sit on or leave in a wallet that goes through the wash.

As with proximity fobs, a smart card is vehicle-specific electronic equipment. A replacement needs the right specification and programming, not just a matching shape. If the card is cracked, unreliable or missing, dealing with it before the last working card fails is usually the easier option.

Which Replacement Is Right for Your Vehicle?

The right answer depends on the vehicle’s make, model, year and existing key system. It also depends on what has gone wrong. If you still have one working key but its casing is damaged, a shell repair may be enough. If the buttons work but the engine will not start, the transponder or immobiliser side needs investigation. If every key has been lost, the vehicle may need a new key cut and programmed on site.

A professional locksmith will normally establish the vehicle details, ask what keys remain and check whether the existing key starts the engine, locks remotely and turns smoothly in the locks. This avoids treating every key issue as the same fault.

For lost keys, security should come first. On compatible vehicles, removing missing keys from the vehicle’s memory can prevent a lost fob being used later. The available options vary by manufacturer and model, but it is worth discussing when a key has been stolen or cannot be accounted for.

Spare Fob or Replacement: Timing Makes a Difference

A spare is not only for households with multiple drivers. It protects commuters, parents, tradespeople and anyone whose vehicle is needed every day. With one working key left, the vehicle is accessible and the locksmith can usually use that key as part of the duplication and programming process. When no working key remains, the job can be more involved.

A spare should be tested before it is put in a drawer. Check that it locks and unlocks the vehicle, starts the engine and operates any relevant boot, tailgate or sliding-door button. Keep it somewhere secure away from the vehicle, not hidden in the glovebox or at home beside the car keys.

Battery changes also deserve care. Opening a fob roughly can damage the case, button membrane or circuit board. Use the correct battery type and make sure the contacts are clean. If the fob still does not work after a new battery, forcing it or repeatedly trying to start the vehicle will not fix an underlying programming or hardware problem.
